La femme trop maquillée et le vieux contrôleur (juillet 2018)

Paris-Avignon. En ce début de voyage, je me détends et, bercée par le roulis du train, m’assoupis un peu. A quelques sièges de moi, une femme trop maquillée s’anime. Le vieux contrôleur aussi. Sans doute une affaire de carte de réduction oubliée. Je m’enfonce dans mon fauteuil et me perds dans mes pensées.

Mais, dans le brouhaha de la conversation entre la femme trop maquillée et le vieux contrôleur, quelques mots percent mes rêveries. Grève, SNCF, gouvernement, service public… Il n’en fallait pas plus pour que je me redresse et tende l’oreille.

Je n’entends pas les questions de la femme trop maquillée mais les devine aux longues réponses que lui apporte le vieux contrôleur. Il parle posément. Il lui explique le statut des cheminots qui ne roulent pas sur l’or, les raisons du déficit de la SNCF qui ne sont pas celles qu’on croit, les dangers de la privatisation et qui vivra verra… Et il en vient aux valeurs fondamentales du service public, aux dégâts du libéralisme,… et pousse le discours jusqu’au problème de la sémantique utilisée par le gouvernement et les médias dominants. Il parle bien, avec un peu de véhémence mais sans agressivité, avec quelques jolies touches d’humour. Il répond avec une patience d’ange aux arguments qu’elle lui oppose.

Le cercle de discussion s’élargit. Un homme cravaté appuie les dires du vieux contrôleur. Derrière lui, une femme de la soixantaine acquiesce du menton. Un autre passager que je ne peux pas voir de mon fauteuil dit quelques mots encourageants. Je suis trop loin pour intervenir mais soutiens le vieux contrôleur d’un sourire. Les échanges sont passionnés mais l’atmosphère reste douce. Le vieux contrôleur a cette aura apaisante qu’on gagne sans doute avec l’âge. Il dit tout ce qu’il faut dire. Je n’aurais pas fait mieux.

Les échanges ont duré une trentaine de minutes. Je me renfonce dans mon fauteuil, réjouie par cette jolie scène. Qui a dit que les Français n’en ont que faire de la politique ? Elle est là, au cœur de chacun, et il s’en faut d’un rien pour la faire jaillir dans les repas de famille, à la cantine, sur le marché… ou dans un train qui roule sans heurt vers le sud.
